Primary School House Captain – Job Description

Position Title: House Captain

Reports to: Head of Student Development

Role Type: Student Leadership Position

Tenure: One academic year


Overview:

House Captains are respected student leaders chosen to represent one of the school’s Houses. They lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and responsibility, setting an excellent example to other students. House Captains play a vital role in promoting a sense of community, sportsmanship, and school spirit through House activities and events.


Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Representation

  • Be a positive role model for all students in behaviour and attitude.

  • Represent your House in school assemblies, meetings, and events.

  • Support the House system by promoting team spirit, fair play, and inclusivity.

Event Organisation

  • Help organise, run, and promote House events (e.g., sports days, talent shows, academic competitions, fundraising days).

  • Encourage students across all year groups to participate in House competitions and give their best effort.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work closely with your fellow House Captains.

  • Communicate regularly with House staff and peers to share ideas and updates.

  • Help gather and share House points or achievements in assemblies or noticeboards.

Mentoring & Support

  • Support younger students and help them feel involved and valued within the House.

  • Listen to the views and suggestions of other students in your House and bring them forward to staff leaders.


Skills and Qualities Needed:

  • Friendly, approachable, and respectful.

  • A good listener and communicator.

  • Organised and reliable.

  • Confident to speak in front of others.

  • Committed to making a positive difference in school life.

  • Enthusiastic about school events and House activities.

Process

Read the House Captain job description and decide if you would like to apply (Yr5 Students). Decide which areas of school life will you have a positive impact on:


  • Book Week

  • Eco Week

  • Maths Week

  • Sporting Events

  • Wellbeing Week

  • Science Week

  • International Day

  • School Assemblies 

  • Seesaw House Challenges


Apply: Open the application form and tell us why you will make a great House Captain. 


Vote: We will create a profile (with no name) of all the House Captain applications. We will ask students and teachers to let us know who they think would make a fantastic House Captain. 


Select: The final decisions will be made by the selection committee made up of the following people:


  • Assistant Head (Mr Davidson)

  • Head of Year 5 (Mr Rossow)

  • Head of Year 6 (Mr Bridges)

  • Head of Student  Development (Mr Hick)

  • Current House Captains


The votes will be shared with the selection committee and will be used to help make the decisions.

I’ve gotten lots of leadership roles while being here in ISB such as: Lunch time ranger, Eco warrior, Group leader of multiple groups such as the film we are currently making and much more. My objective for being a house captain is to make students think school as fun yet challenging, to have house challenges that make you excited, to try new things. I’m very brave and I can hype people up, if you’re in a bad mood I’ll always be there for you. I’m glad I get this opportunity and even if I don’t get picked I will be so happy for whoever does! I think I would be a good house captain because I have had a lot of experience because I did student council and eco warrior at the same time and I would have a lot of creative ideas for fun events. Also I had a lot of experience for leadership. I feel like I can help with anything I can like give you advice if you want any options or opinions for anything. I advance a lot in many subjects such as Maths English and Art.

I want to be House Captain because I love ISB. I’m friendly, approachable and would love to hear ideas on how to make a difference.


I’ve been an Eco Warrior and a Student Council member and would love the chance to bring some of my ideas to the table, such as during book day we should have a competition to see who has the best costume and to make it educational we should have them say their favourite line/quote from their book.


Also I have loads of ideas on how to make the house games even bigger and better.


I would be a great leader for yellow house!

I would like to be house captain because I find it would be a great learning experience for me. Also it would enhance my confidence, I display myself as a approachable and a sensible person. I am always happy to help in any way possible. I have participated in various different BJSL competitive competitions such as tee ball, football, netball, swimming etc. I have some experience in leadership like student council.

I have creative ideas to get people having fun and working together. Also, I am good at helping and supporting people. Another thing is that I'm interested in Maths and I'd like to come up with new ideas for Maths challenges on Seesaw. For example, how many multiplication questions can you answer in one minute, video yourself doing that and submit to Seesaw.

I think I should be a house captain because, I’ve already gone to FOBISIA which shows I have leadership and good communication. Secondly, I am active both physically and mentally. I do football and karate, and I am interested in maths and reading. Lastly, I am an active listener and pay attention to what is being said.

I believe I have the skills necessary for this position and the experience necessary. I have been a member of the student council since 2024, I have been a part of student council assemblies and activities. Also, I have participated in various BJSL events such as netball, tee ball, football, swimming etc. I find myself as an approachable and sensible person. I understand the responsibility of a house captain, I am always happy to lend a hand. I also would like to have this opportunity to raise my confidence and build others up too. I am friendly. This is important because ISB is all about making friendships and working together. I find it really easy to make friends with anyone no matter how old they are. And I have friends in school from kindergarten to year 13 and those who already finished school.

I believe I would be a great house captain because I always aim to lead by example. I am respectful, hardworking, kind and I enjoy supporting and helping my classmates in anyway I can. I believe in teamwork. I am a member of the student council at ISB. I enjoy planning events. I am a confident speaker in front of others. Outside classroom I love playing football, swimming and train in MMA ( Mixed martial arts) . These have taught me focus , discipline , teamwork and confidence - skills that I believe are very important in a leadership role. I love studying at ISB , helping my fellow classmates and teachers with errands. Hence I truly care about my school and would love to be a house captain since I have the right balance of confidence, motivation, leadership qualities, kindness and dedication to make a real difference and have always dreamt of this day. I think I can be a good house captain and help lead my fellow pupils. As a former student council committee I have a lot of experience, working with people, making new friends and giving your ideas a chance to be a reality. Hello ISB, I am a house captain candidate and here are my areas of interest and why you should vote for me.


In sporting and Eco week events I would like to make sure everyone feels included and experiences achievement.


International day is cool since the whole community gets together but doesn’t it get a little bit dull after a hour and 30 minutes? I would combine my love for sport and internationalism by helping house captains host an international day penalty challenge

Each goal ticks that student or parent’s nation off a world map. Imagine the fun roaming the campus finding more nationalities to play our game. The more goals, the more countries we celebrate!

I think I will be a good house captain because I am responsible and I love eco-friendly projects all around the school. If I was a house captain I will listen to people's ideas, I will help people when they need help, I will make sure people are happy when they are down and I will support events that are enjoyable for everyone. I will also listen to people’s ideas about our upcoming events as well as share my own ideas to help out the team.
