A Celebration 🇧🇳
It has been a short couple of weeks at ISB following the public holidays and celebrations. As we return to the classroom, we celebrate the milestone of Brunei’s 42nd National Day.
Brunei History and Culture: At the Heart of Our Curriculum
While we are an international school, Brunei’s rich history and culture remain at the very centre of our focus. We believe that for any international student, developing a profound insight into the heritage of the country they call home is vital. It equips them with a global perspective and fosters the intercultural understanding and appreciation necessary to thrive in a multicultural world.
Across every year group, this commitment is woven into the daily life of our school. Our youngest learners explore local nature and the beauty of the Brunei mangroves, even turning their hands to the traditional art of Tenunan weaving. Across Primary, students dive into the history of Kampong Ayer and the archaeology of the Brunei River, witnessing first-hand how settlements and trade have evolved over centuries. The learning deepens as students explore the 'Golden Age' of Brunei under Sultan Bolkiah V as well as the significant impact of World War II and the Japanese occupation through first-hand accounts and expert sources.
This ongoing research and integration ensures that every ISB student, whether local or foreign, leaves us with a deep respect for the vibrant identity of Brunei.
The Importance of Home and Host Country
In an international school context, the relationship between our 'home' and 'host' countries is fundamental. By honouring the traditions of Brunei, we teach our children to respect diversity and recognise the beauty of the multiculturalism that makes ISB unique. We want our students to be globally aware and culturally sensitive individuals who contribute positively to the world at large.
Looking Ahead
As we move into a full week of learning next week, please continue to check the Year Group messages on Seesaw for specific details regarding upcoming trips and activities relevant to your child's cohort.
If you have any questions about any aspect of school life, please do not hesitate to message in Seesaw.
