Head of Primary Message Week 21

At International School Brunei, our Teachers, Learning Assistants and Learning Support Assistants are always using the latest evidence-based research to ensure Everyone Excels. This week, we shared best practices, ideas, and strategies that are being used across Primary to ensure our students are confident and fluent readers and have a genuine love of reading. As a learning school, we never stop looking for ways to improve and we are incredibly ambitious. We prioritise both the way we care for all students' wellbeing and academic rigour.

Throughout Early Years and Primary we have a focus on developing and improving reading for all students. We ensure the development of communication and language, we develop students' speaking and listening skills and their wider understanding of language. We use a balanced and engaging approach which integrates both decoding and comprehension skills, we have a very systematic Phonics programme and we have targeted support to help those who are struggling. We also use high quality information about all students' current capabilities to select the best next steps for teaching and we use comprehensive assessments to ensure all students make good progress.

So far this year, we have seen tremendous progress in reading across the school and this is a result of the incredible work of the whole staff team and the strong home-school partnership. We know families enjoy reading at home with students, this is of course the best way to support the work we do in school. Thank you to all parents for the ongoing support.
